Marvel Studios Reportedly Working On Secret Invasion Disney+ Series

As we count down to the beginning of Phase 4 of the Marvel Studios movie franchise as well as a bunch of Disney+ spinoff series, it appears that there may yet be another joining the latter group, in the form of a Secret Invasion Disney+ series.

First reported by Bleeding Cool last month, the potential Disney+ TV series could be based on the comic books of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu. Additionally, due to the fact that the storyline involves the shape-shifting Skrulls, it could be a direct tie-in to the upcoming Captain Marvel 2, which won’t be released until 2022.

To further support this claim, journalist Daniel Richtman (via CBR) also reported that Marvel Studios could be adapting Secret Invasion, and that it will involve a little more than just the conflict between the Skrulls and the Kree Empire.

“I hear the reports are true and there really is a kind of Secret Invasion related show in development for Disney+ that will lead straight into Captain Marvel 2 which I told you awhile ago would likely be Secret Invasion,” Richtman said. “I think the show would likely focus on S.W.O.R.D and the Invasion from the side of the Skrulls and Kree and Captain Marvel 2 from the side of the heroes.”

Just to catch the uninitiated up, Secret Invasion was a 2008 Marvel comic book crossover event by Bendis and Lu, and followed the story of Skrulls, which the comics depicted as evil, infiltrating Earth and using their shape-shifting abilities to masquerade as various members of The Avengers and beyond to dismantle society from the inside.

Since the Skrulls were depicted as good guys in Captain Marvel, it will certainly be interesting to see how Marvel and Disney adapt them into this potential show, or even introduce evil Skrulls (or even the nefarious Super Skrull).

Additionally, both Bleeding Cool and Richtman also flirted with the idea of S.H.I.E.L.D’s more aggressive subdivision, S.W.O.R.D, to emerge as well. This could tie in with the Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credits scene of Nick Fury in a space station with some Skrulls, which could set up the existence of S.W.O.R.D.

Whether the Secret Invasion Disney+ series is fact remains to be seen.

In the meantime, Disney+ will still introduce a wealth of Marvel TV series in the coming months, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision.
