‘Hamilton’ Director Thomas Kail Set To Helm Live-Action ‘Moana’ Adaptation

Disney made a splash in cinemas with The Little Mermaid, and the media giant is far from done with live-action adaptations of its beloved animations. Moana looks to be next in line, with Hamilton director Thomas Kail (Grease Live!, 2 Broke Girls) set to helm the project.

Kail’s work with Hamilton saw the musical bringing home an impressive 11 awards. So, while Moana will be his feature narrative directorial debut, fans can rest assured of the film’s future. Though the casting list for the live-action adaptation is currently incomplete, a few actors have already stated whether they will grace the big screen or not.

Auli‘i Cravalho (Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet), who voiced Moana in the original, won’t be reprising her role. However, she’ll still be a part of the film, taking on the role of executive producer with Scott Sheldon (Jungle Cruise, Black Adam).

On the other hand, Dwayne Johnson (Black Adam, Fast Five) will be involved both on and off-screen. Disney released a live-action announcement where the actor talked about his excitement and involvement with Moana.

Besides reprising his role as Maui, the Jumanji actor will also produce the live-action adaptation, via his Seven Bucks Productions, alongside Dany Garcia (Red Notice, Baywatch) and Hiram Garcia (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Jungle Cruise).

Jared Bush (Encanto, Zootopia), who wrote the original screenplay, is returning to Moana alongside Dana Ledoux Miller (Designated Survivor, Narcos). The musical element hasn’t been forgotten, with Lin-Manuel Miranda (The Little Mermaid, Encanto) making sure that Moana has just the right soundtrack to return the heart of Tefiti.
