The long wait is almost over, as HBO has confirmed that season 2 of The Last of Us will premiere on 14 April on its streaming platform Max. In addition, the channel has also released new character posters of Joel, Ellie and Abby to mark its release date.
Running for seven episodes, season 2 will take place five years after the events of the first, picking up with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) living with Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) on a settlement in Montana. As the show will adapt the second game in the series, The Last of Us Part II, players should be well familiar with what comes next, with their hard-earned peace being shattered by the arrival of Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever), a woman who holds an immense grudge against Joel.

Joining the cast of season 2 are Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazine as Jesse, alongside Danny Ramirez, Tati Gabrielle, Ariela Barer and Spencer Lord as Manny, Mel, Nora, and Owen respectively. A familiar voice is also set to return, with Jeffrey Wright reprising his role in the game as Washington Liberation Front leader Isaac.
The Last of Us season 1 was a faithful adaptation of Naughty Dog’s 2013 hit action-adventure video game of the same name, and went on to receive critical and commercial acclaim. Due to its success, HBO’s Francesca Orsi recently teased a 4-season plan, meaning that season 2 will not adapt the second game in its entirety, opening up the potential to further flesh out the backstories of its characters beyond that of the games.
The Last of Us season 2 will air on 14 April 2025 on Max, with HBO’s official synopsis reading “After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
