Almost a year after the release of its first season, HBO has finally greenlit its horror anthology series, IT: Welcome to Derry, for a second season, with Brad Caleb Kane returning as its sole showrunner.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Kane will now helm the series alone instead of sharing duties with Jason Fuchs, as seen in the first season. Executive producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who worked on the IT film franchise, are also set to return. According to THR’s sources, the development team had to restart Season 2’s story from scratch, which led to the renewal delay.
Unlike the first season, which was set in 1962 and centred on a couple and their son, IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 will go back in time to 1935 during the Great Depression and focus on the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who arrive in Derry to purchase ammunition, only to find themselves caught in a brutal massacre and confronted with terrifying horrors.
“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” said head of HBO Max Original Programming Sarah Aubrey in a statement. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”

Released on 26 October 2025, IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1 ran for eight episodes and received generally favourable reviews, sitting at a respectable 80 percent score on review sites like Rotten Tomatoes. Season 1 featured a cast of Jovan Adepo, Taylor Paige, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe and Rudy Mancuso, with Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise, although it seems likely that most of these faces won’t return for Season 2, considering the timeline difference. Casting for Season 2, on the other hand, has not been announced yet, nor has the show received a release window.
