‘The Odyssey’ Dethrones ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ As Highest-Grossing R-Rated Film With US$1.35B Global Haul

Christopher Nolan is adding another notch to his belt of The Odyssey achievements, as the film has now become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time at US$1.352 billion worldwide, surpassing the previous record holder, 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

As reported by Variety, the film has surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine’s US$1.338 billion global haul and now sits at the top of the only three R-Rated movies in history to hit $1 billion in revenue, with the third being 2019’s Joker (US$1.079 billion).

To celebrate the achievement, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds publicly congratulated Nolan and the team with a video post on social media. “Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car,” wrote Reynolds in the post’s caption, with the clip combining two scenes from both films that were shot in similar locations – Deadpool and Wolverine duking it out inside a car, and Matt Damon’s Odysseus walking through the forest.

Of course, this is just the latest achievement earned by The Odyssey, which quickly became a big-screen sensation following its release on 17 July. The film wasn’t just the first in history to be shot entirely for IMAX, but also became the platform’s highest-grossing release of all time, surpassing even 2009’s Avatar. It also set records within Nolan’s own slate of movies, outgrossing 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises to become his top-earning movie ever.

The Odyssey stars Damon as Odysseus, who undergoes a long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War and encounters mythical beings as he attempts to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and his son, Telemachus (Tom Holland). Other members of the star-studded cast include Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Zendaya and Samantha Morton.
