The second season of The Last of Us is set to premiere this April, but the post-apocalyptic action is far from over. Following showrunner Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann’s comments that more seasons will be required to adapt The Last of Us Part II, the video game it’s based on, HBO has given an idea of how long it could run for.

“We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons,” said Francesca Orsi, EVP and head of drama, to Deadline. “I wouldn’t want to confirm, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this, and then we’re done.”
Other details are being kept under wraps, so it’s unclear if three more seasons will be sufficient to wrap everything up. While a seven-episode count has been set for Season 2, its endpoint remains a big question mark and may extend beyond the events of the source material. In any case, fans can expect plenty of content — Mazin previously shared that the third season will be “significantly larger”.
Taking place five years after the original season, the sequel marks the return of Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) as protagonists Joel and Ellie, respectively. Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, Isabela Merced’s Dina, and Young Mazino’s Jesse are on board as newcomers, with Catherine O’Hara also confirmed as a guest star.

“The Last of Us II focuses on two playable characters in a post-apocalyptic United States whose lives intertwine: Ellie, who sets out in revenge for a murder, and Abby, a soldier who becomes involved in a conflict between her militia and a religious cult,” reads the official synopsis for Naughty Dog’s 2020 action-adventure title.
Season 2 of The Last of Us is slated to air on Max in April 2025.
