Third time’s still the charm for House of the Dragon. Maintaining its strong viewership track record from the past two outings, the Game of Thrones prequel has brought its third season to a resounding end, racking up 21 million global viewers in its first three days of debut.
According to media measurement firm Nielsen and Warner Bros. Discovery’s own metrics (via Variety), more than 11 million came from the U.S., with each episode averaging 34 million global views. While it sits slightly lower than Season 2’s figures, which clocked a 35 million-viewer average, this latest instalment is among HBO Max’s top three most-watched returning seasons ever.
It bodes well for the fantasy series, following news of a Season 4 renewal planned for 2028. Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” House of the Dragon is set 200 years before Game of Thrones and portrays the events leading up to the decline of House Targaryen. The first season debuted in 2022 and has notched several accolades, including a Golden Globe win and Emmy nominations. Season 2, consisting of eight episodes, premiered two years later.
Returning cast members for the third season include Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) as Alicent Hightower, and Steve Toussaint (The Knock) as Lord Corlys Velaryon. Among the new additions are Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy) as Ser Roderick Dustin, Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts films) as Ser Torrhen Manderly, James Norton (Happy Valley) as Ormund Hightower, and more.
The show is co-created and executive produced by Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal. Season 3 features multiple directors, such as returning names Clare Kilner, Andrij Parekh, and Loni Peristere, as well as newcomer Nina Lopez-Corrado, whose previous credits include Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Supernatural. It won’t be the last fans see of Westeros — Game of Thrones will mark its big-screen debut with Aegon’s Conquest, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the spin-off that adapts the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” series of novellas, is getting a sophomore outing in 2027.
