‘Deadpool 3’ Director Shawn Levy Weighs In On Cameo Rumours, Says Some Are True

It seems Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine won’t be the only character to stir excitement in Deadpool 3. As cameo speculations continue to intensify, director Shawn Levy has addressed the rumour mill, where reports of other 20th Century Fox-Marvel character appearances are floating around.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker confirmed, without naming specifics, that some of the rumours are true, while others aren’t.

“The rumors of actors, singers, sports stars who are all apparently in Deadpool 3 are fabulous. If all I read was the internet, I would have the greatest cast ever assembled in the history of cinema, so I’ll simply say that some of those rumors are true, and some of them aren’t,” he shared.

Apart from Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, who’s reprising his role as the titular Merc with a Mouth, the threequel is also set to welcome other familiar faces. Joining Jennifer Garner’s return as Elektra are Brianna Hildebrand and Shioli Kutsuna as couple Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, and Stefan Kapicic as Colossus.

While additional cameos are being kept under wraps, Levy teased how the upcoming Deadpool sequel will stick to its humour-tinged roots, comparing it to classic comedy works like Midnight Run and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

“We wanted something that felt grounded, real…” he told Deadline. “You put Hugh Jackman in his most iconic character alongside Ryan Reynolds in his most iconic character; it’s more of a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles more than it’s a descendant of Airplane.”

“I wasn’t going to mess with the DNA of that franchise,” added Levy. “Our movie is raw, audacious, very much R-rated and we went to great lengths to not shoot it on sound stages with digital environments”.

Indeed, the threequel won’t hold back on the violence despite being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was previously reported to be as R-rated as it gets, with violence that’s “in your face and hardcore”.

Deadpool 3 is currently slated for a 3 May 2024 release, with filming brought to a halt due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes. “Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least a large swath of it, we’re paused,” Levy said on the filming progress. “We’re halfway through filming Deadpool, co-starring Wolverine. It was a joy every day and that chemistry is as relentlessly awesome as we all hoped it would be.”

“Our crew and the rest of us are awaiting a fair and equitable deal that ends these strikes and puts this industry, inclusive of our movie, back at work,” he finished.
