Transformers Beats Spider-Man Even As ‘Across The Spider-Verse’ Emerges As Sony’s Biggest Animated Film

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has taken the crown as Sony’s highest-grossing animated release, outpacing its predecessor, Into the Spider-Verse, in just 12 days! The film raked in a global box office total of US$390 million through Sunday, well over Into the Spider-Verse’s global box office lifetime total of US$377 million.

The friendly neighbourhood doesn’t seem to be at the limit, too, with Across the Spider-Verse making it big in international markets like China and Mexico.

However, after rolling out in cinemas, another film has pushed it down to second place at this weekend’s domestic box office.

The Autobots and Maximals were victorious as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opened to an impressive US$60.5 million, holding their own against the US$55.5 million Across the Spider-Verse earned during its second weekend.

Rise of the Beasts has been lauded as successfully reviving the Hasbro toy-to-movie franchise amid rather lacklustre predecessors, earning an A- CinemaScore from audiences and excellent PostTrak scores.

Despite this early win, Across the Spider-Verse has proven to be a worthy opponent to the long-running franchise with heavy staying power. The robots in disguise might have won the battle of at this week’s domestic box office, but will they win the war of the global box office lifetime total?
