As Disney Cuts Output, Marvel Will Only Release Three Movies And Two TV Shows A Year

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is taking a breather. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Marvel will reduce its output and release no more than three movies and two TV shows a year, as the franchise attempts to find its balance.

In 2021, Marvel released four movies and five TV shows. 2022 and 2023 saw the MCU add three movies and three TV shows. The franchise’s declining viewership after The Marvels became the lowest-grossing Marvel film at the box office. Since Avengers: Infinity War, the franchise has struggled to regain the levels of hype seen during its climax.

The new strategy will likely be implemented after Phase Five wraps up in 2025, which already has four MCU movies, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four, and Blade.

“We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three,” said Iger during the company’s quarterly earnings call. “And we’re working hard on what that path is.”

Whichever path the MCU chooses to take, it’ll be one fans are cautiously optimistic towards.
