Sony Pictures has scored a double victory at the box office weekend, with two of its films securing top spots – Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which continued its spectacular performance with an additional US$39 million over its fourth weekend, and Insidious: Out of the Further, which made its debut with US$25.3 million.
As reported by Variety, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Insidious: Out of the Further secured the first and second spots over the box office weekend. Marvel’s latest Spidey adventure has now garnered US$855 million in the US and US$2.22 billion globally to date, making it not just one of eight films in history to surpass the US$2 billion box office milestone, but also the third-highest-grossing domestic release to date, only behind 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens (US$936 million) and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (US$858 million).
Directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton, the sequel sees Tom Holland’s webslinger as he continues to protect New York City anonymously and investigates a powerful new threat, all while his superpowers undergo a surprising and potentially dangerous evolution. The movie also stars Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colon-Zayas, and Marvin Jones.
Meanwhile, the horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further secured second place with a US$25.3 million domestic haul, with the film also earning a further US$35 million internationally for a global debut of US$60 million. The latest entry of Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s long-running paranormal franchise might not have launched to as much fanfare as its predecessor, 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door (US$33 million), but with its relatively low budget of US$18 million, it’s still poised to turn a profit.
Marking the first Insidious film directed by Come Play’s Jacob Chase, the sequel centres around a mother who discovers that she can travel into the Further, a purgatorial realm of lost souls, and stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Lin Shaye.
Rounding off the top five earners this box office weekend were Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey at number three with another US$19.5 million over its sixth weekend, Paramount’s PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie at fourth place with US$9.1 million, and Warner Bros’ The End of Oak Street at fifth place with US$9 million.
