J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot has joined alongside Warner Bros and Mattel to turn the beloved Hot Wheels IP into a thrilling story for the big screen.
The project was first announced in 2019 by Mattel’s Chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz. While there are currently no details on what could possibly happen during the movie, we presume that much like other movies on racecars such as Speed Racers, Cars and even Fast and Furious, the Hot Wheels live-action will see cars racing and speeding on race tracks.
Mattel and Warner Bros are coming in hot with their new slate of movies. Aside from Hot Wheels, the two companies are also working on Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film with Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu set to star.
In addition to Hot Wheels and Barbie, Mattel also has feature movies based on American Girl, Barney, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason, Masters of the Universe, Polly Pocket, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Thomas & Friends, Uno, View Master and Wishbone on their development slate too.
Warner Bros, on the other hand, announced a Funko Pop movie in 2019. Warner Bros and Bad Robot are currently developing Superman, Zatana and an animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ iconic children’s book Oh, the Places You’ll Go.
Bad Robot is in post-production on thriller Lou for Netflix starring Allison Janney and Jurnee Smollett. The production company is also working with director Matt Shakman on a new Star Trek film for Paramount.
