Andy Serkis Says The Batman Will Be Darker Than Previous Versions

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is undeniably one of the most highly-anticipated superhero film currently being produced. With a star-studded cast including Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader himself, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, and Andy Serkis as Bruce Wayne’s trusted butler Alfred Pennyworth.

However, with filming for the series halted due to the coronavirus and the release date of the film pushed back to the end of next year, not much else is known about The Batman beyond the few photos posted online.

Thankfully, in an interview with Lad Bible, Serkis has given us a clue as to what to expect with The Batman – a darker, more intense version of the superhero.

“I would say that’s not far from the truth,” Serkis shared, when asked if fans can expect a darker version of Batman with Reeve’s film.

He elaborated with, “[The Batman] is very much about the emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce. That’s really at the centre of it. And it is a really exquisite script that Matt has written.”

The actor, who is best known for his role of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, will be the latest in a long line of actors to portray Alfred on the big screen, following in the footsteps of actors such as Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons.

That said, Serkis asserts that he is not looking to mimic their previous performance, and will instead be focused on creating his own version of the butler.

“[Caine] was fantastic. His Alfred was legendary, I couldn’t even begin to go there, really,” Serkis said.

If all goes according to plan, fans can expect to see this darker version of Batman in theatres on 1 October 2021.
