Zack Snyder Open To Releasing Scrapped ‘Justice League’ Sequels… In Animation?

Zack Snyder, the original visionary behind the DCEU, has expressed openness to completing his Justice League saga in an animated format. Despite the conclusion of his cinematic universe with Warner Bros. and the advent of James Gunn’s new DC era, Snyder’s interest in revisiting his version of Justice League remains alive.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine (via ScreenRant), Snyder entertained the idea of finishing Justice League 2 and Justice League 3 as animated films. “Yeah, absolutely. That’d be fun. That’d be cool,” he commented, indicating a flexible and innovative approach towards continuing the story. This possibility of animation offers a practical solution, potentially simplifying actor involvement to voice work alone, which is less demanding than live-action productions.

The original plans for these sequels had been ambitious. Justice League 2 was set to focus on the heroes confronting Lex Luthor and his villainous cohort before a tragic twist involving Lois Lane’s murder by Darkseid, which would corrupt Superman with the Anti-Life Equation.

This storyline was to lead into Justice League 3, where the grim ‘Knightmare’ future would unfold. This apocalyptic vision would see Superman turned against humanity, culminating in a timeline where The Flash attempts to prevent this dystopian future by travelling back in time. The trilogy was intended to conclude with an epic battle against Darkseid and his forces from Apokolips.

Currently, Snyder is not actively pursuing more DC content, focusing instead on his new Rebel Moon franchise. However, his willingness to explore unfinished narratives in the DCEU suggests a continued passion for the stories and characters he developed.

While the realisation of these sequels in any form is not guaranteed, especially with the DC Universe moving in a new direction under Gunn’s leadership, Snyder’s enthusiasm for a Justice League animated adaptation provides a glimmer of hope for fans.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is currently streaming on HBO GO.
