After 7 years, 47 Ronin will be getting a full-on sequel. The action-packed samurai film would this time be produced by Universal 1440 Entertainment, and will be distributed exclusively by Netflix.
According to Collider, the sequel would be set about “300 years into the future”, and will see an interesting blend of classic samurai themes as well as futuristic cyberpunk ones. Taking over the project from Carl Rinsch is Mulan actor Ron Yuan.
Aside from the cast and release date, one big question mark that many would hope to see answered soon is the involvement of Keanu Reeves. Despite being the lead for the first movie, it might be a bit of a long shot to see the Matrix and Bill & Ted actor to reprise his role as Kai, given the new film (48 Ronin…?) is set several centuries in the future.
However, if there’s anything we’d learnt from a certain breathtaking video game that Reeves is involved in, it’s that anything is possible, so long as he is part of it.
“I’m incredibly excited to be working with Universal and the producing team on this genre-blending, martial arts, action, horror and cyber-punk film,” said Yuan to Deadline. “This will be a fun, intense, supercharged thrill ride for viewers globally.”
Rinsch’s 47 Ronin launched to polarising reviews back in 2013, and raked in a measly US$151 million at the global box office, a loss compared to its US$175 million budget.
