Chris Hemsworth is gearing up for more action in Extraction 3, and he will have some new company along for the ride. Three years after its initial announcement, the Netflix sequel has started filming and revealed its latest wave of casting additions, led by Pierce Brosnan, best known for playing the titular spy agent in four James Bond films.
As reported by Deadline, the two-time Golden Globe nominee is joined by Don Lee, or Ma Dong-seok, of Train to Busan fame, Joe Taslim (Mortal Kombat 2), Chi Lewis-Parry (28 Years Later), and Seina Agudong, star of Amazon’s upcoming Carrie series. Details about the character roles are kept under lock and key, as is the film’s plot, and a release date has yet to be set.
Co-starring alongside Hemsworth, who reprises his role as Tyler Rake, are Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani as an unnamed stranger and Tyler’s partner Nik Khan, respectively. Sam Hargrave is back at the helm after directing the first two instalments, both of which ranked on the streamer’s Most Popular Films list, with Joe and Anthony Russo returning as producers. The former also serves as scriptwriter alongside Invasion creator David Weils.
Based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks and illustrator Fernando Leon Gonzalez, the Extraction films follow Tyler, a former black-ops agent-turned-mercenary who takes on high-stakes rescue missions around the globe. The first instalment, released in 2020, racked up over 99 million views in its first four weeks and made Netflix history as its most-watched original film.
Lee’s casting comes after inking a deal to star in Tygo, a Korean-language entry in the franchise that centres on a former child soldier-turned-mercenary who embarks on a mission of revenge through Korea’s criminal underworld. The spin-off is currently in post-production and will be followed by a TV series called Mercenary: An Extraction Series, starring Lupin‘s Omar Sy, Game of Thrones‘ Natalie Dormer, and Boyd Holbrook.
The official logline for the latter reads, “Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, he must navigate life-or-death choices while confronting his own deep emotional wounds. The series explores the trauma, betrayal, and moral conflicts experienced by characters pushed to the edge.”
Both the show and Extraction 3 have no release date.
