13 Things Revealed In ‘The Marvels’ Trailer

Marvel Studios has dropped the teaser trailer to The Marvels, the follow-up to 2019’s Captain Marvel.

The sequel sees the return of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel though she’s not the only superhero suiting up, as Teyonah Parris returns as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel. The trailer gives us a glimpse into the lives of these three superheroes, each with their own unique powers, as they team up to face a new threat.

Let’s dive into all the cool stuff we spotted in the trailer.

1) S.A.B.E.R. Space Station

The trailer opens on S.A.B.E.R. Space Station, the spacecraft that Nick Fury was last seen hanging out in with a bunch of Skrulls in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home. This was originally thought to be a base for S.W.O.R.D., the extra-governmental intelligence agency that showed up in WandaVision. Now that S.H.I.E.L.D is gone, is S.A.B.E.R. the cosmic version Fury’s old organisation? After all, in the comics, S.W.O.R.D. is the space-based counterpart of S.H.I.E.L.D. There’s no telling what S.A.B.E.R. stands for or what this new organisation is up to.

2) Nick Fury is back

Samuel L. Jackson is back as Nick Fury but he looks different here compared to his more grizzled appearance we recently saw in the Secret Invasion trailer. Given that the film was previously set to release on 28 July 2023, could The Marvels take place before Secret Invasion? Or perhaps this Nick Fury is a Skrull in disguise?

3) Monica Rambeau in space

According to the film’s synopsis, Monica Rambeau is now a S.A.B.E.R. astronaut. As the daughter of Danvers’ friend and fellow airman Maria Rambeau, she was last seen gaining newfound powers in WandaVision after entering The Hex created by Wanda. In the trailer, we see her phasing/intangibility powers interacting with a wormhole — likely a Jump Point, seen in Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel — which results in Rambeau swapping places with Kamala Khan.

4) Everyone gathers at the Khan household

The cast of Ms Marvel will be returning as well, as the trailer features the Khan household including Kamala’s parents and her older brother Aamir. It seems that their home will become a central location for characters meeting, with Fury and Rambeau both visiting the place, and Danvers also dropping by after swapping places with Kamala.

From the looks of this scene, it appears that Kamala was also in the midst of apprehending a couple of thugs, as she’s seen in her superhero outfit while two men are tied up in her living room.

5) Someone’s been keeping tabs on Kamala

While Monica explains the situation to the Khan family, Kamala is seen holding a tablet displaying a profile of herself. It’s possible that this implies that Nick Fury has been keeping tabs on Kamala, or more broadly, on emerging mutants in the MCU.

As a fun Easter egg, the photo of Kamala that the tablet is showing is a real-life headshot of actress Iman Vellani.

6) Goose the Flerken returns

Along with many other returning stars, Goose the Flerken is also back. It seems that Goose has been accompanying Carol Danvers on her intergalactic adventures. The adorable alien cat devours a couple of Kree soldiers after Kamala Khan swaps places with Danvers, and the fledgling superhero’s reaction is both hilarious and priceless.

7) Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms Marvel are entangled

We learn from Monica Rambeau’s explanation in the Khan household that her, Carol Danvers, and Kamala Khan have their powers entangled. This means that whenever any one of them uses their powers, they end up swapping places with another. So, what better way to get around this issue than to travel together, so that they’re all in the same centralised location?

We see Carol piloting a spacecraft with Monica and Kamala in tow, as they traverse through space to unravel the root of their problem. Kamala’s first space adventure is certainly going to be an eye-opening one.

8) A planet with dancing aliens?

Plot leaks for The Marvels have alluded to a plot point with an alien planet where its inhabitants sing and dance to communicate. We get to see a snippet of that colourful sequence in the trailer so this might be that planet.

Or it could be that Carol and Kamala switched bodies while Kamala was attending a Pakistani wedding or celebration? Either way, Carol does not seem to be enjoying herself.

9) Park Seo-joon’s secret role in The Marvels

The trailer also shows off popular Korean star Park Seo-joon (What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, Itaewon Class), in an undisclosed role. Rumour has it that he’s playing Prince Yan, the ruler of Aladna — the alien planet with all the dancing aliens. We think he looks more like an Asian variant of the trickster Loki.

Another theory suggests that he might be playing Noh-Varr, aka Marvel Boy. The character is a Kree super-soldier who joins the Young Avengers in the comics, which would tie in with all the other Young Avengers introduced in the MCU thus far, such as Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang, America Chavez, and Elijah Bradley.

10) Goose has kittens!

A quick scene in the trailer shows off a kindle of kittens racing down some steps. These are likely offspring of Goose. In the comics, Goose’s counterpart, Chewie, ends up having over a hundred babies (which Rocket Raccoon wanted to prevent by killing the alien cat before it laid its eggs; the Flerken is a dangerous species, after all).

11) Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn

We get a good look at Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn, who is primed to be the film’s main antagonist. She is wielding a Cosmi-Rod, a Kree war hammer, and can be seen standing next to a couple of Kree Accusers. Perhaps she’s picking up the slack after Ronan the Accuser failed in his mission in Captain Marvel and was defeated in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Dar-Benn was a Kree General in the comics, although he was male, and this is a gender-bent version of this character.

12) New costumes for Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms Marvel

The trailer gives us a glimpse of new costumes for Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms Marvel. Ms Marvel appears to have a more armoured look, and Monica’s updated suit bears a closer resemblance to her look as the superhero Photon in the comics. Meanwhile, Captain Marvel’s new drip is nearly identical to Genis-Vell’s costume in the comics. Genis-Vell is the son of the comics’ original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, who passed his powers down to Carol.

13) Dar-Benn’s bangle

Near the end of the trailer which shows off a creative action sequence, Dar-Benn is wearing a bangle that emits a purple, crystalline energy, similar to Kamala’s. This is likely picking up the plot thread from Ms Marvel — we saw in a flashback in the TV series that the bangle was previously found on a severed blue hand, establishing a connection to the Kree. Kamala is probably getting an upgrade if she can retrieve this other half of the pair of bangles.

The Marvels premieres in theaters on 10 November 2023.
