The end of 2018 saw the rise of AMC’s The Walking Dead as the most-pirated TV show, effectively ending HBO’s Game of Thrones’ 6-year reign, which started back in 2012.
Prior to TWD, currently on its ninth season, having the most downloads on torrent sites such as BitTorrent, it was ranked #2 since 2014, which makes it unsurprising for the 9-season old series to eventually usurp the HBO heavyweight.
The main reason for this is probably due to the glaring fact that GoT hasn’t had aired a season in 2018, as the cast and crew patiently ramp up towards its big final season release later this year. As such, TWD, another series with a huge following, took the chance to grab top spot with its current season’s release back in October.
To be fair, this list is based on pirated downloads on series with episodes that aired only in 2018, meaning to say that in terms of overall downloads, GoT would still come out on top, as per IKnowWhatYouDownload’s annual BitTorrent stat tracker.
Accompanying the zombie-centric show in the other two top spots are CW’s The Flash and CBS’ The Big Bang Theory, both of which had seasons that premiered in 2018 as well. Other popular series in the top 10 include Vikings, Suits, Supernatural, and CW’s two other sister series Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. The new video-on-demand service DC Universe’s Titans is the newcomer to the fold, premiering in November.
