‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Synopsis Reveals 4-Year Time Jump

It won’t be long before fans can catch their favourite webslinger back on the big screen, but much about the plot of Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains under lock and key…until now, that is. In a twist nobody saw coming, a Random House listing for an upcoming art book for the highly anticipated sequel included an official synopsis that teases a four-year gap, a “web of mystery,” and haunting memories of Spidey’s past.

“Four years have gone by since we last caught up with our friendly neighbourhood hero,” reads the publisher’s site. “Peter Parker is no more, but Spider-Man is at the top of his game, keeping New York City safe. Things are going well for our anonymous hero until an unusual trail of crimes pulls him into a web of mystery larger than he’s ever faced before. In order to take on what’s ahead, Spider-Man not only needs to be at the top of his physical and mental game, but he must also be prepared to face the repercussions of his past!”

It’s nice to have some form of confirmation, even if the details are still a little vague and raise several questions. For one, will Michael Mando’s Scorpion, who was last seen swearing vengeance on the superhero in Spider-Man: Homecoming, return in the film? Does the New York setting indicate a crossover with Disney+‘s Daredevil: Born Again, considering that Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher is set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie debut? As for new threats, perhaps Tarantula and Boomerang — first introduced in Marvel Comics in 1966 and 1974, respectively — will appear?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks the fourth instalment in the Holland-led franchise and the second entry in Phase 6 of the MCU, after The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Zendaya (Euphoria) and Jacob Batalon (Novocaine) are expected to reprise their roles as Peter Parker’s girlfriend, MJ, and his best friend, Ned, though the extent of their contribution is unclear. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton serves as director, with franchise newcomers Stranger Things star Sadie Sink andThe Bear‘s Liza Colón-Zayas cast in mystery roles.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theatres on 31 July.
