The Spirit of Vengeance is dusting off his motorcycle. Following an initial announcement at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios has firmed up the release date for its upcoming Ryan Gosling-led Ghost Rider film, which will race into theatres on 28 July 2028.

This makes it the third Marvel addition to the 2028 schedule, joining Black Panther 3, starring David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus) as the titular superhero, on 15 December, and the yet-to-be-titled X-Men reboot on 5 May. Notably, it also marks the first time since 2025 that the studio is putting out three movies in the same year, after the underwhelming box-office performance of Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps prompted a more scaled-back slate for the next few years.
Not much else is known about the project, including the version of Ghost Rider it follows, but Shawn Levy (Deadpool and Wolverine) has been tapped to direct. Gosling takes over the role of the skeletal superhuman from Nicolas Cage, who played Johnny Cage, the very first iteration, in two movies for Sony. Other successors in the comics include Danny Ketch, Johnny’s long-lost younger brother, Alejandra Jones, Robbie Reyes (who was featured in the Agents of SHIELD series), Kushala, and Sal Romero, as well as several alternate versions.

With Avengers: Doomsday and its Secret Wars sequel expected to set up a major “reset” for the MCU, it’d be interesting to see how the character will fit into the picture. Before that, though, Gosling is embarking on a new journey to a galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: Starfighter on 28 May 2027, reuniting him with Levy yet again.
Following 2028, another untitled film has been dated for 9 November 2029, and what that entails is anyone’s guess (the sequel to Shang-Chi? A solo Nova outing, with Loki director Michael Waldron at the reins?). For now, though, all eyes are on Doomsday‘s release on 18 December, and Marvel has released a handy watchlist to prepare for the highly anticipated showdown between the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
The new Ghost Rider movie is due to bow on 28 July 2028.
