Sony’s movie adaptation of the Gran Turismo game, which was only revealed last month, already has a release date, and is set to hit theatres on 11 August 2023. Said to be based on a true story, this movie is directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium, Chappie) with the screenplay by Jason Hall.
The official plot summary reads, “Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.”
Though no details have been revealed yet, the movie is expected to pull from GT Academy, which lets the best Gran Turismo players transition to real-life racing. The Nissan-sponsored competition held its first international challenge in 2008 and lasted until 2016. Quite possibly, the story could be about Lucas Ordoñez, the inaugural winner of 2008 who went on to race professionally with Nissan for a decade.
This Gran Turismo movie is only one of the many games-to-screen adaptations that Sony is busy making these days. It scored a successful theatrical release of 2022’s Uncharted, which stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, and is set to release the following titles in the near future: The Last of Us (HBO), Ghost of Tsushima (theatres), Twisted Metal (Peacock), Horizon (Netflix), and God of War (Amazon).
