Despite losing its directors, the Street Fighter movie makes a swift recovery, landing a March 2026 release date. The announcement comes after director duo Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) exited the project just a week ago, but no replacement director was revealed, leaving much to speculation.
The film has been in development since 2023, with Sony, Legendary Pictures, and Capcom behind the film, only breaking its silence a week ago to announce the departure of its directors. Legendary Entertainment has both the rights to a film and TV deal for the Street Fighter franchise, so there’s still a TV series to look forward to.
It’s been more than 10 years since the last Street Fighter movie in 2009, The Legend of Chun-Li, which was a box office bomb, scoring only 3% on Rotten Tomatoes and being unable to break even against its production budget of US$50 million.
Since its arcade origins in the 80s’, the game franchise has since moved to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, with six games to date and a stacked roster of characters, giving any adaptation a wealth of source material to play with.
But will it be enough to pack a punch when the Street Fighter movie hits theatres on 20 March 2026? Only time will tell.
