PS5 Live Service Games Could Make Up Half Of Releases By 2025

In the console space, Sony is definitely keen to increase the advantage that the success of the PlayStation 5 has brought. Whether it be through new services, acquisitions, or plain old games, things are only going to grow. However, Sony is increasingly emphasising the live service strategy, and as part of the latest investor relations presentation, the PS5 is set to be home to more of such games.

The corporation is estimating that half of its investments for games on the PS5 could fall under the live service umbrella. Of course, it is not a decision to be taken lightly, and the data shared seems to support Sony in this direction. The company is making quite a nice profit from add-on sales via live service titles, with free-to-play revenue also increasing.

The aim is to have at least three more live service games on the PS5 market by the end of March 2023, and then to 12 when 2025 rolls around. What kind of games will fall under the category remains to be seen, as MLB The Show 22 is considered one, while Gran Turismo 7 is strangely not on the list. While that slice of the industry is definitely lucrative, there is always the risk of oversaturation and collapse, and nobody would want to see that.

In other news, Sony is also expecting to see an impressive growth on the PC side of things, and this will likely coincide with the further expansion into the live service space on PS5. As the report shares, this will be Sony’s move to transform from its “current console-centric approach to a future where large elements of our community extend beyond the console.”
