Four years is more than a reasonable time for an upgrade, and the Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless headphones offer a strong reason to make the leap. For starters, it touts the company’s best-ever active noise cancellation (ANC), which was never its strongest suit, and the value its predecessor brought has won over a dedicated following.
Building on the existing design, it features the same 42mm dynamic drivers — now tuned to be slightly bassier or darker — and 57 hours of playback with ANC on, alongside eight advanced microphones for reduced noise, versus four previously. The cans are lightweight, weighing 290 grams, and boast comfortable cushions, which means there’s hardly any pressure on the top of the head, although clamping force can be felt. More notably, users can swap out its battery to extend its lifespan, which is rarely seen in the audio landscape.
True to the Sennheiser formula, there’s a lot to like about the sound quality, especially for the average consumer. The mids are perfect, as is the texture replication, and overall performance holds up well across a variety of genres. As for ANC, it’s indeed an improvement over before, even if it can’t fully block out sounds in the higher register, such as train announcements and higher-pitched speaking voices.
At US$399, the Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless headphones continue to deliver value in a space occupied by competition like BOSE, Sony, and Apple. It comes in three colours: Denim, White, and Black, and is “coming soon” to Singapore.
