Capcom has confirmed that its upcoming remake, Resident Evil Veronica, will be played in the first-person perspective, similar to what the studio did for the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes.
Unveiled during Summer Game Fest, the trailer for the remake played out in the first-person perspective, leading many fans to assume that the remake would adopt the approach by 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, or possibly combine the perspectives for both Claire and Chris’ sections, something similar to what Resident Evil Requiem did.
To clear the air, the remake’s producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, came forward during a Q&A session following the reveal to clarify that the title would be a third-person game.
“The team behind this remake is the same team that handled the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes,” Hirabayashi explained. “So if you looked at the past remakes that this team has created, you can probably sense a certain mindset that we have when we make a game, and that mindset includes preserving those iconic and key aspects of the title. So again, if you look at our work, you can probably get kind of a good sense of what kind of approach we’re taking here, and maybe you can imagine what that might look like for this remake.”
The original 2000 title, Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, saw series veteran Claire Redfield on a search for her missing brother Chris, another familiar face in the franchise. One half of the game is played as Claire, while the other half is spent with her brother, so it’s likely that Resident Evil Veronica will follow suit. For now, it remains to be seen how differently each sibling’s section will play out, but since Claire is more experienced with the zombie threat following the events of Resident Evil 2, it’s likely her skillset will also evolve as well.

“So during Resident Evil 2, she was a university student,” Hirabayashi added. “Veronica takes place about three months after the events of Resident Evil 2. So let’s just think about how that progression or how much change happened in about three months… She has had training from her brother, and of course, she survived the incident in Raccoon City, so she’s not going to be the exact same character. But the portrayal of her and her style is going to be in alignment with that timeline and that history that we’re looking at for Veronica.”
As to just how much Claire has evolved, or if her character will differ from that of the original game, only time will tell, as the game steadily approaches its release sometime in 2027.
