Xbox has revealed more information about the Netflix movie adaptation of its flagship gaming IP, Gears of War, with the film set to explore the origins of Delta Squad, the team which protagonist Marcus Fenix joins in the first game as they face off against the Locust threat.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Xbox’s executive vice president and chief content officer Matt Booty gave updates on some of the game adaptations in the works, including the Gears of War film. Directed by David Leitch (John Wick), the movie has received its official description and will tell “the origin story of Delta Squad, a ragtag crew of soldiers who wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust, a race of subterranean creatures set on destroying humanity.”
Based on its description, the film looks set to take place between the events of the upcoming game prequel, Gears of War: E-Day, and the first game in the franchise. It’s also possible that the film will not feature Fenix in a leading role, as the character only joins Delta Squad partway through, as he was stuck in prison prior to the events of the first game. It’s also possible that the film might centre on the origins of Fenix joining the squad, meaning it will be a direct adaptation of the first game, but since details are vague, fans will just have to wait and see.
Booty also dropped an update on another Xbox live-action adaptation, Rare’s pirate adventure Sea of Thieves, revealing that the project will be produced by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). While this project is still in its early stages, the team is exploring how to adapt the game’s player and community-led nature to the big screen and how to present these themes of cooperation in the movie format.

Apart from these two projects, Microsoft has a few others in the works, including another Gears of War Netflix adaptation, this time being an animated series, a Minecraft Netflix animated series, a live-action Wolfenstein series at Amazon, and a Fallout Shelter reality competition.
