MCU’s Blade To Embrace R-Rating For Darker, Ruthless Approach

Blade, Marvel’s vampire-hunting superhero, is set to be the MCU’s second R-rated movie, according to director Yann Demange in a recent interview with Deadline. This places it in the company of Deadpool 3, as they break away from the typical PG-13 territory.

Demange expressed the significance of the R rating for Blade, emphasising its importance to the film. In Demange’s words, “I come out of this wanting to be more open, more vulnerable and bring a more personal aspect to my work. But for Blade, we are going to have fun because [star Mahershala Ali] is such a deep actor.”

He added, “I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that. He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.”

This R rating places Blade in a rare category within the MCU, as previous R-rated films like Logan and Deadpool existed outside of the MCU’s main storyline. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has generally adhered to a more family-friendly tone, but this seems to be changing with the announcement of Blade‘s R rating and the forthcoming TV-MA series, Echo.

Blade has faced its fair share of challenges, including delays, writer changes, and rumors of star dissatisfaction. These issues have led to reports that the film is being made on a budget of under US$100 million.

Initially announced during San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Blade generated considerable excitement among fans. Its release was initially scheduled for this month but was postponed due to its troubled development.
