‘Lovecraft Country’ Director Yann Demange To Tackle Marvel’s ‘Blade’

Marvel’s Blade has found yet another new director.

Yann Demange, who directed the excellent pilot to HBO’s Lovecraft Country, will be taking over directing duties for the Marvel vampire movie. The French-Algerian director has also previously received the British Independent Film Award for Best Director for his independent film ’71.

Additionally, Michael Starrbury (When They See Us) will be penning a brand new script for the movie. Sources from The Hollywood Reporter mention that the film’s star, Mahershala Ali, was personally involved in selecting the writer. The media outlet also has sources that say “the new intent is for Blade to dark and gritty in tone”, hinting towards a potential R rating.

Bassam Tariq (These Birds Walk) was originally attached to direct the film. Production paused when he abruptly left the project earlier this year due to creative differences, leading to a delay in the film’s originally-scheduled release date of 3 November 2023. Marvel Studios has since focused on revamping the story and putting the right team in place to lead the project. Production is expected to resume in Atlanta in 2023.

Blade is currently set to be released in theaters on 6 September 2024.
