Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ Starts Filming Spring 2024, Baron Zemo Unlikely To Return

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is gearing up for a new journey with Thunderbolts, a film that unites the anti-heroes of the universe in an action-packed adventure.

Wyatt Russell, who transformed into John Walker/US Agent in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, recently confirmed in an interview that filming for Thunderbolts is scheduled to commence in spring.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Russell expressed excitement about his role, stating, “There’s so much to play with John, and there’s so much more to do with John.” He also shared his enthusiasm for working with the talented cast. “I’m so lucky to get to work with the kind of talent that I’m going to work with when Thunderbolts starts up in March or April,” hinting at the depth and intrigue of the upcoming film beyond typical superhero antics.

Adding to the Thunderbolts ensemble, there’s been much speculation about Daniel Brühl reprising his role as Baron Zemo, a character he portrayed in Captain America: Civil War and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Addressing these fan theories, Brühl, in a recent interview with Screen Rant, clarified his involvement in the upcoming Marvel project.

Brühl explained that due to scheduling conflicts, he couldn’t participate in the filming of Thunderbolts. He also expressed some uncertainty regarding the intricacies of the MCU’s storylines, highlighting the challenges actors face in navigating the expansive Marvel universe. “It’s always a delicate subject matter of what can you say? What can you not say?” he remarked, acknowledging the complexity and secrecy that often shroud Marvel’s projects.

Despite not being part of Thunderbolts, Brühl left the door open for a future return as Zemo in the MCU. He spoke about the unpredictable nature of character arcs within Marvel’s narrative universe, suggesting there could be opportunities for Zemo’s reappearance. His willingness to reprise the role of the reformed villain indicates that fans might yet see Zemo in upcoming MCU projects. “And [if] destiny brings Zemo back sometime again, I would probably not say no.”

Thunderbolts promises to be a unique addition to the MCU, bringing together unlikely characters to save the world. The film’s cast includes Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, and Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, reprising their roles from 2021’s Black Widow. With Natasha Romanoff’s absence, the reunion of Yelena and Red Guardian is anticipated to be a poignant moment.

The ensemble also features Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Steven Yeun as Sentry. Notably, Harrison Ford will appear as Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, a character set to join the MCU in Captain America: Brave New World.

Fans can expect an exciting dynamic between Russell and Stan, building on their chemistry from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The film is also one of the most awaited features in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts is set to release globally on 25 July 2025.
