Joe Russo Says Watching ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Is Essential To Prepare For ‘Doomsday’

Avengers: Doomsday director Joe Russo is giving fans some homework to do, as he has commented that watching the upcoming re-release of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame will be vital to understanding the plot of the upcoming film.

Speaking to Fandango during an interview, Russo explained how the upcoming Avengers: Endgame Encore will feature roughly four minutes of extra footage, content that he says is essential to better understand the plot of Avengers: Doomsday.

“It’s going to connect the story of the two movies. There’s a natural progression from Endgame into Doomsday, which is also inclusive of all the other stories that have been playing out,” he explained. “But I think it’s important to see Endgame again in theatres for two reasons – One, you’re going to have a lot of fun cheering and screaming and reliving all the emotions you had the first time you saw it, and two, I think it’s required viewing for following the story in Doomsday.”

His brother, Anthony Russo, also added that for those who saw Avengers: Endgame when it was originally released, you couldn’t see this coming.”

Starring Robert Downey Jr in a new role following his heroic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, Doomsday sees a team-up of Marvel heroes spanning the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and the Avengers as they work together to take on the villainous Doctor Doom. With that in mind, the re-release of Endgame might help to explain how Downey will portray both Tony Stark and Doctor Doom, which is likely to be the result of some multiverse shenanigans the MCU is well-known for.

The superhero epic will see the return of its cast of Marvel A-listers, including Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.

Avengers: Endgame Encore will be released on 25 September 2026, followed by the launch of Avengers: Doomsday on 18 December.
