Instead of emitting powerful beams of energy from his eyes, Asa Germann will spread his wings and take to the skies. The Gen V and Scream 7 star has been cast as fan-favourite Angel in the upcoming X-Men feature from Marvel Studios, joining a previously announced cast of Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey, Kit Connor (Cyclops), Christopher Abbott (Professor X), Samara Weaving (Emma Frost), Inde Navarrette (Rogue), and Maya Boyd (Storm).
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Germann initially auditioned for Cyclops but later landed the role of the high-flying mutant after leaving an impression on the Kevin Feige-led studio. Thunderbolts* helmer Jake Schreier is directing the film, with Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear writer/co-writer Joanna Calo on scripting duties, and Adam Driver bringing the villain Mr Sinister to life.
The X-Men reboot won’t be Angel’s first outing on the silver screen. Ben Foster played the character in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand before Ben Hardy took over the reins in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, albeit as his evil alter ego, Archangel.
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Warren Worthington III, aka Angel, was introduced in the first issue of Marvel Comics’ X-Men in 1964. Born with feathered wings on his back, he joined Professor Xavier’s team after initially hiding his mutation. During one part of his history, he was maimed and transformed into Archangel, who has metallic wings and a different set of powers.
Angel is hardly Germann’s first superhero stint, either. The 28-year-old previously portrayed Samuel “Sam” Riordan, – a schizophrenic hero who is near invulnerable and has massive strength – in Gen V, the spin-off of The Boys that followed super-powered young adults at a crime-fighting university. The series was cancelled earlier this year after two seasons.
