Director Jon Watts Departed Fantastic Four Movie To Helm New Star Wars TV Series

What’s better than directing for Marvel Studios? For Lucasfilm. Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts has been the talk of the town with plenty of rumours surrounding a potential Star Wars series. Thanks to a new exclusive report by Vanity Fair, we’ve got confirmations.

Delving into what’s in store for Star Wars fans who have been looking forward to new content like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor and Ahsoka, the report briefly states that there’s another new series on the horizon that’s yet to receive a title. Yes, the untitled show will be created and executive-produced by Watts.

Writer Chris Ford, who worked alongside Watts and made Spider-Man: Homecoming is also attached to the project.

The show is said to take place during the post–Return of the Jedi reconstruction that follows the fall of the Empire, the same as The Mandalorian, but its plot remains a secret. Inside Lucasfilm, the show is being described as a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.

Whilst not much else is known, a casting notice has called for four children, around the age of 11 to 12 years old.

Watts’ series joins Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka and The Mandalorian season three on Lucasfilm’s upcoming TV slate. The director recently completed his Spider-Man trilogy with Marvel Studios starring Tom Holland. The latest movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, grossed close to US$2 billion worldwide at the box office and broke records at the box office in Singapore.

Watts was also announced to helm the Fantastic Four reboot for Marvel Studios in 2020, but has left the project, citing that he needs a break from making superhero movies.

“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years,” Jon Watts said. “I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

Outside of Lucasfilm and Marvel, Watts is also set to write and direct a film reuniting George Clooney and Brad Pitt for Apple. He’s also producing a new Final Destination film for New Line Cinema and HBO Max.
