‘Mortal Kombat II’ Kounts Down To An Epic Tournament With Final Trailer

Warner Bros’ Mortal Kombat II is almost upon us, with the highly anticipated sequel receiving its final trailer that packs in blood and action galore, with a very special cameo thrown into the mix.

Released to mark the opening of ticket sales, the latest trailer places an emphasis on the actual Mortal Kombat tournament this time around, and offers no shortage of fast cuts teasing the clashes of its various heroes and villains. The film will also mark a tonal shift from the 2021 original, which faced criticism from many fans with its decision to focus on the events leading up to the titular tournament and its newly created lead, Cole Young (Lewis Tan).

To this end, the film is doubling down on known faces this time around, centring instead on franchise mainstay Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), who gets recruited to participate in the fight to secure the freedom of Earthrealm. It’s to be noted that Cole still appears in the film, with the trailer featuring a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of the original hero facing off against the big bad Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), although the speculation here is that Cole will battle the villain in the films opening minutes, only to get tragically killed off, leading to Earthrealm having to find a new hero in Cage.

Cameo by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon

That’s not the only detail fans have spotted in the latest trailer, as it also includes a special cameo from Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat games, who shows up as a bartender serving Cage, which is a neat nod for fans who have been with the gaming franchise from the start.

Returning to helm the sequel is director Simon McQuoid, who also serves as producer alongside James Wan, Michael Clear, Todd Garner, and E. Bennett Walsh. Mortal Kombat II’s cast will also include Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Noob Saibot, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Sindel, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and CJ Bloomfield as Baraka.

Mortal Kombat II will “get over here” when it launches in cinemas on 8 May 2026.
