James Gunn Says He’s Not Making Young Superman Movie Despite Henry Cavill Recast

James Gunn says he isn’t making a young superman movie.

A fan asked Gunn when the young Superman movie is set in the past on Threads and Gunn set the record straight, replying “I was never making a ‘young Superman’ movie, just a Superman movie!”

This is, understandably, upsetting for Henry Cavill fans to hear. In the past, Gunn previously indicated that one of the main reasons behind recasting the Henry Cavill was because of when the story will take place.

“In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill,” wrote Gunn in December 2022 on X (previously known as Twitter).

Shortly after Cavill hung up the cape, Gunn confirmed that Superman: Legacy is not an origin movie. Co-CEO Peter Safran also claimed that the movie would focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”

Cavill played the role of Superman/Clark Kent in four DC movies – Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman (2016), Justice League (2017) and most recently Black Adam (2022). A Man of Steel sequel with Cavill to lead was also reportedly in the works before the recast.

The recast took half a year, with David Corenswet announced to take on the role of Clark Kent/Superman in June this year.

The rest of the Superman: Legacy cast were also announced. Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion is Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi is Michael Holt, Isabel Merced is Hawkgirl and Anthony Carrigan is Metamorpho.

Superman: Legacy will kick off Chapter One of the new DC Universe from Gunn and Safran. Other projects under Chapter one includes movies Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and The Authority, as well as five other TV shows: Creature Commandos, Waller, Lanterns, Booster Gold, and Paradise Lost.

Superman: Legacy is slated to release on 11 July 2025.
