MCU’s Frank Grillo Defects To DC Films; Chris Pratt Open To Booster Gold Fan Casting

It’s one superhero universe to another, as Captain America: Civil War actor Frank Grillo has confirmed his leap to DC Films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The action star revealed that he’ll now play a role in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios, attributing the decision to the disappointing treatment of his MCU character Brock Rumlow, better known as the iconic Cap villain Crossbones, in the movie.

“They never told a story [about Crossbones]. The mythology of the MCU and just what Marvel has in its pool of characters, it’s so deep. Crossbones was there for a minute, but he was supposed to be there longer, then they went the direction they did,” Grillo said in an interview with ComicBook.com.

“I think Crossbones serves a purpose, but I think the interesting thing is that if you see how many people around the world have responded to Crossbones, and again, he’s on the screen for a very f––king short amount of time, I think there’s more there. I think there was more meat on the bone. I was disappointed, which is why I went over to DC.”

The news comes amidst speculation that the martial artist has been cast in Creature Commandos, which is set to kick off the DC Universe officially alongside Superman: Legacy. The Man of Steel project, due to hit theatres on 11 July 2025, will also mark Gunn’s first directional project after this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with a future reunion with the MCU crew likely to be in the cards.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, the filmmaker expressed his intention to work with as many of the cast in new roles at DC – a plan that both Karen Gillian and Chris Pratt, who play Nebula and Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies respectively, are keen to explore. In particular, fans have been pushing for Pratt to portray Booster Gold, a charming, glory-seeking superhero who time-travelled from the future.

While there are no discussions in place yet, the actor is not opposed to the casting. “If James thought I was right for it, then you know that I would have to consider it.” No objections there at all, no siree.
