As immortal warriors prepare to clash yet again in the upcoming Highlander movie, director Chad Stahelski has revealed more details about its setting and the role that The Witcher actor Henry Cavill will play as the lead.
Speaking to The Direct, the filmmaker shared that the reboot is being brought forward from “the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong” with a “big opportunity for action”. At the centre of the story is Cavill’s character, a sword master who’s been alive for 500 years and trained in various martial arts.
“So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc there. And you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts,” Stahelski explained.
The Man of Steel actor began intense training for his role at the start of the year, teasing that it’ll be a “very long process”. “If you thought you’d seen me do swordwork before, you haven’t seen anything yet,” he teased.
The Highlander reboot is scheduled to begin filming in Scotland by January 2025, with story specifics still under wraps. The original cult classic starring Christopher Lambert was released in 1986, chronicling the climax of an age-old war between immortal warriors across past and present-day storylines.
The pic would later spawn several film sequels and TV spin-offs, which Stahelski is hoping to do with the upcoming outing. It will also reunite the director with screenwriter Mike Finch, known for John Wick: Chapter 4, who is penning the script.
Stahelski’s version of Highlander is tentatively slated for 2026.
