Geek Review: Shure SM7dB XLR Dynamic Vocal Microphone

After 50 years in the business, Shure is more than familiar with acoustic success. The SM7 has become a household name within the industry, coming in as a highly-recommended pick for broadcasting, podcasting, and recording veterans. Then there’s the SM7B, the upgrade to its predecessor with improved vocals, clarity, and sharp detail.

It’s never easy to make the best even better, yet Shure’s SM7dB XLR Dynamic Vocal Microphone somehow manages to elevate the experience, packing in a built-in preamp that offers a supplementary +18 or +28 decibels (dB) of clean gain. For the uninitiated, this means users will be able to enjoy a cleaner setup without the hiss and noise on other audio interfaces when it reaches a gain of +60dB and above.

The kicker, though, is how it delivers crisper, brighter audio for less. At S$799, the microphone is only S$150 more than the SM7B, and introduces other new perks, such as increased audio interface sensitivity for maximum clarity. Herein lies the question: how does its performance translate to the real world?

Check out the above video as the Shure SM7dB XLR Dynamic Vocal Microphone is put to the ultimate test of audio prowess.

GEEK REVIEW SCORE

Summary

The Shure SM7DB is a well-deserved update to the current SM7B. The built-in preamp alleviates the need for an after-market version, but allows consumers the option to continue using them. The SM7DB is a fitting heir to the Shure throne.
