With the DC universe getting overhauled under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership, major shake-ups are in order. The biggest is, of course, the 10-year plan for the new DC Universe (formerly known as DC Extended Universe, or the DCEU), which will kick off with Superman: Legacy on 11 July 2025.
Next on the list is a complete change in casting. According to Variety, none of the Justice League or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars — including Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (Flash), and Jason Momoa (Aquaman) — will reprise their roles in the DCU.
Cavill’s replacement has already been found, with David Corenswet (Pearl, Hollywood) tapped to don the red cape alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The other characters remain up in the air, but Momoa may return in a different capacity as the DCU changes hands. Reportedly, the actor is in talks to play Lobo, the alien interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter from Czarnia, either in Superman: Legacy or a standalone film.
The news also doesn’t bode well for fans of Gadot’s Wonder Woman, whose future has been unclear. In August, the actress claimed that Wonder Woman 3 was included as part of Gunn and Safran’s revamp, but reports later confirmed it wasn’t actually in development. While that didn’t count out Gadot appearing as the character in other movies and shows, this latest development seems to leave little room for doubt.
Meanwhile, a couple of other characters will get to keep their role in the Gunn-Safran universe. Viola Davis, who portrayed Amanda Waller in both of 2016’s Suicide Squad and Gunn’s version of the movie, will continue her role in the Max series Waller and possibly in the new Superman tentpole. Similarly, John Cena is set to lead the second season of Peacemaker, with Xolo Maridueña confirmed to reprise the role of Blue Beetle as well.
