James Gunn’s ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 Being Written As Part Of New DCU

It’s a strange transition time at DC. With James Gunn taking over the helm but not completely wiping the slate clean, a lot of the current and upcoming plans have thrown fans into confusion. Peacemaker enthusiasts will be able to rest a little easier on that front, as the writer, producer, and director has the answer to one of the most important questions about Season 2.

Peacemaker Season 2 DCU

When asked on Threads if the highly-anticipated season would take place in the DC Universe (DCU), or whether its continuity will be addressed, Gunn replied: “Yes and yes”. This comes after confirmation in a recent Instagram comment that he’s currently writing the show, following the end of the months-long writers’ strike.

The response corroborates recent reports highlighting his intentions to carry over certain characters from the previous DC continuity – referred to as the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) – to the DCU, including John Cena’s Peacemaker and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. The last confirmed member is Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle, a movie with no clear connection to the DCEU.

In the case of Peacemaker, the first season is aligned with the DCEU, but it seems Season 2 counts as part of the DCU. Confusion comes as TV show seasons are usually set in the same universe, so it’s safe to assume the entire transition will probably be addressed in the show, which currently has no release date.

According to Gunn, it’s “okay to be confused” about the current state of things. “It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it’s okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet,” he said back in September.

The first chapter of the DCU, titled Gods and Monsters, will kick off with Superman: Legacy. Slated for release on 11 July 2025, it stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane respectively.
