Films Sees Shifts Post Strike As ‘Deadpool 3’ And More Get New Release Dates

With the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Marvel Studios has announced a revamped release calendar, with Deadpool 3 now planned to hit theatres on 26 July 2024, instead of the initially scheduled 3 May slot. This adjustment sets the stage for a domino effect, including changes for Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and Blade.

Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: New World Order, originally slated for July, now finds its home on 14 February 2025, creating an exciting Valentine’s Day treat for fans. Thunderbolts, starring Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, has moved to 25 July 2025, experiencing a slight delay from its initial 20 December 2024, release. Blade, featuring Mahershala Ali, is set for 7 November 2025, a shift from its earlier 14 February 2025 date.

Both Blade and Thunderbolts faced production delays due to the recent writers’ strike, forcing a temporary halt. With the strikes resolved, Marvel is gearing up for a dynamic summer, with Deadpool 3 resuming production in London under the direction of Shawn Levy with star Ryan Reynolds.

This shake-up currently positions Deadpool 3 as the lone Marvel film in 2024, possibly addressing “superhero fatigue” as such projects face unique challenges at the box office.

Apart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the revised schedule also has Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, directed by Barry Jenkins, moving to 20 December 2024, from its initial 5 July 2024 slot.

As Hollywood studios reorganise their calendars post-strike, Marvel’s calculated moves mean that the MCU will take a slower pace as we see delays in the introduction of Deadpool and Blade in the universe, as well as Sam Wilson’s first big-screen appearance as Captain America. Hopefully, the additional time will sharpen Marvel’s focus and offer an exciting slew of cinematic adventures.
