Eternals Leads With US$162M Global Box Office, Opens at No. 1 With M18 Rating in Singapore

It looks like Marvel Studios’ Eternals is putting naysayers to shame.

The 26th movie from the mega Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise, directed by Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao, had a rather rocky start with critics leaving middling reviews (compared to other MCU films), a long run time and it was even banned in a number of countries, but just like the titular heroes, Eternals is coming out of hiding to make a mark of its own.

The movie grossed US$161.7 million globally over the weekend, and is the biggest launch frame during the pandemic in markets like Italy, Brazil, Hong Kong and Korea. Internationally, the current top 5 markets are Korea (US$14.4M), UK (US$7.1M), France (US$6.7M), Mexico (US$5.7M) and Australia (US$5M).

This places Eternals as the second-biggest worldwide opening for a Hollywood title in 2021, beating out Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsGodzilla vs KongBlack Widow and No Time To Die.

In Singapore, Eternals made S$1.8 million in its opening weekend, which is strong performance given the higher M18 rating, as well as the long runtime of 2 hours and 37 minutes which limits the number of screenings that cinema operators can have in a day.

If you do watch the film, remember to stay for two post-credits scenes, and if you want to know more about the secret MCU character in the second scene, you can read about it here.

Eternals stars Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Don Lee, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Barry Keoghan, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh and Kit Harington.
