The Game Awards 2023: Kojima Teams Up With Jordan Peele On Xbox Horror Title, ‘OD’

It’s been four years since Death Stranding, but fans of Hideo Kojima will have to wait no longer. At The Game Awards 2023, the renowned Japanese gamemaker took to the stage with Jordan Peele to reveal OD, with a 90-second long trailer that stars Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier repeating the same lines, culminating in a haunting scream. The teaser left out Margaret Qualley, who was previously rumoured to be in the game.

In partnership with Xbox Game Studios, it is supposedly slated to be a third-person survival horror game – though Kojima remained tight-lipped on the scope and definition of this new project.

“I really like challenging new things, ground-breaking things, that’s my kind of rule,” Kojima said via a translator. “But this one, with the help of Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology, I am kinda doing this… it’s really to make immersive… something no one has done before. It is a game, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a movie. A new form of media.”

The one thing we know, beyond the marquee cast of OD, was that it’ll be a collaboration with established comedy and horror filmmaker Jordan Peele, whom he deeply admires. The director of Nope and Us was alongside Kojima, and had nothing but praise for him. “I just want to stress,” he said, “What this man is building here is unlike any other game.”

According to Kojima, Peele isn’t the only big name involved. There will be more “legends” working with him on this immersive title, a team which he dubbed as “The Avengers”.

Kojima’s no stranger to the horror genre. He had released a free playable teaser for Silent Hills on the PlayStation 4, a planned reboot that was ultimately cancelled in 2015.

OD will be Kojima Productions’ sophomore title. Founded by Kojima with former Konami employees back in 2015, the studio released its debut Death Stranding in 2019, to much fanfare and acclaim. Presently, OD does not have a release date.
