Taika Waititi Clears The Air On Recent Star Wars Rumours

In January, rumours were floating around of Taika Waititi being approached by Lucasfilm to work on a new Star Wars movie. Not much has happened since the rumours surfaced, with both the studio and director maintaining their silence. Till now.

Taika Waititi has finally broken his silence to set the record straight. During an interview for his Oscar-nominated film Jojo Rabbit, Waititi was asked about the rumour of Lucasfilm approaching him and he replied, “Listen, what does ‘approach’ even mean? I’ve seen Star Wars, that’s about as far as it goes.”

Waititi did not confirm that he was working on a new Star Wars movie, but neither did he deny anything. He could simply be playing coy till an official announcement is made by Lucasfilm or Lucasfilm’s president Kathleen Kennedy who has said on more than one occasion that she’d love to work with the Academy Award-winning director.

IG-11 on The Mandalorian

Of course, it helps that Waititi is no stranger to the Star Wars universe, having worked as one of the directors on The Mandalorian, alongside Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Waititi has even voiced the fan-favourite bounty hunter-turned-nurse droid, IG-11. Plus, Waititi also directed Thor: Ragnarok, showing that he is more than capable of creating a good film filled with humour, action, and emotion.

However, if Waititi is indeed on board to direct a Star Wars movie, it will be a while before the film gets made as Waititi has his hands full right now with his next film, Next Goal Wins, as well as Thor: Love and Thunder which hits theatres in 2021.
