It might be still a while till the premiere of Season 2 of The Witcher on Netflix, but we know for sure that the world of Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia just got a lot larger and more complex with more characters set to join.
Over the weekend, the streamer officially revealed seven new additions on Twitter that will be joining the hottest show in the world since its airing last December (via Redanian Intelligence). They include:
- Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones) as Nivellen
- Yasen Atour (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) as Coen,
- Agnes Bjorn as Vereena
- Thue Ersted Rasmussen (Fast and Furious 9) as Eskel
- Aisha Fabienne Ross (The Danish Girl) as Lydia
- Paul Bullion (Peaky Blinders) as Lambert
- Mecia Simson as Francesca.
Among the six new names, Hivju’s is no doubt the most notable, having been part of HBO’s Game of Thrones for a good number of seasons. His character, as we’ve learnt earlier, in The Witcher is Nivellen, a man cursed with a form of lycanthropy that turns him into a bear. In the books, Nivellen was portrayed to have a strained relationship with the bruxa (female vampire) Vereena (Bjorn), so it will be a really interesting storyline to tackle in the second season.
The other notable additions include three new witchers in the cast. Eskel (Rasmussen) and Lambert (Bullion) are Geralt’s colleagues, also hailing from the School of the Wolf. In the games and books, they trained together in the stronghold of Kaer Morhen, as well as pursued witcher contracts together occasionally. The final witcher, Coen (Atour) only featured in the books, and was from the School of the Griffin. How their roles will pan out in Season 2 remains to be seen.
The final two castings are that of sorceresses. Lydia van Bredevoort (Ross) is the personal assistant to Vilgefortz, while Francesca Findabair (Simson) is another powerful yet enigmatic sorceress, not dissimilar to Yennefer of Vengerberg.
While it is a lengthy list of newcomers – both fresh-faced and experienced – to The Witcher Season 2, hardened fans of the franchise would notice the absence of another witcher in Vesemir, as well as master intelligentsia Sigmund Djikstra, and another sorceress in Philippa Eilhart. Though we’re not sure about their appearances in Season 2, we do know that Vesemir will be the main character of the upcoming animated spinoff, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, suggests that he might appear in the main series eventually.
In any case, the above actors will be joining returning cast including Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey for Season 2 of The Witcher. No premiere date has yet been confirmed.
Marion has a serious RPG addiction. Sometimes it bleeds into real life; he forgets to sleep because he thinks he has a Witcher’s body clock. Forgive him in advance if he suddenly blurts out terms such as “Mind Flayer” and “Magic Missile”, because never once does he stop thinking about his next Dungeons & Dragons game.
