The Power Rangers is getting another stab at a revival — this time as a live-action series. According to The Wrap, a new project for the beloved superhero franchise, based on the Japanese series Super Sentai, is underway at Disney+, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz serving as writers, producers, and showrunners.

Hasbro is attached to produce the show, which will “reinvent the franchise for a whole new generation of fans while delighting those who already know and love the world of Power Rangers.” Little else is known beyond that, however, including cast members, release date, and how it differs from the other existing versions.
The update comes a year after Netflix scrapped its plans for a live-action Power Ranger series, spelling the end of a two-year development. It’s not the first attempt that fell through, either — Lionsgate’s previous 2017 reboot underperformed at the box office, despite being the highest-grossing film in the series at US$142.5 million worldwide. The adaptation starred Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Banks.

It remains to be seen if Disney’s reimagining of the eponymous quintet will finally break the ill streak, but Steinberg and Shotz have been doing good work with Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The adaptation of Rick Riordan’s best-selling series of novels was well-received on Disney+, and received a third season renewal ahead of its Season 2 premiere in December this year.
As for Power Rangers, it first kicked off with 1993’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and launched a massively successful franchise that spawned 145 episodes, three live-action movies, numerous video games, and comic books.
