Kathryn Hahn Is Mother Gothel In Disney’s Live-Action ‘Tangled’

Following news that Agatha All Along star Kathryn Hahn was in the running to portray the villainous Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action Tangled movie early this year, the actress has now confirmed her casting, proving that it was indeed Agatha all along.

This announcement came via a video posted on Hahn’s Instagram page, where the 52-year-old shared that she had just learned the meaning of OOTD, or Outfit of The Day, showing off her drip with a printed T-shirt featuring the faces of the animated version of Mother Gothel. Additionally, the actress has also renamed her Instagram username to @motherhahn to celebrate her new role.

To congratulate Hahn on the role, the original Mother Gothel voice actor, Donna Murphy, posted a heartwarming reply to the post, writing, “KATHRYN !! From one Mother to another … Congrats! And remember… I love you MOST,” referencing the iconic line from the villainous stepmother to Rapunzel in the 2010 Tangled animated film.

With her casting, Hahn will now appear alongside Milo Manheim (Zombies), who will play Flynn Rider, the charming thief and love interest of Rapunzel, with the leading princess portrayed by Titan’s Teagan Croft. Tangled will be directed by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Thor: Love and Thunder) and Kristin Burr (Cruella) attached as writer and producer, respectively.

2010’s Tangled was based on the Brothers Grimm Rapunzel fairy tale, and centred on a princess with magical long hair who spends her entire life locked in a tower by her evil step-mother, who kidnapped her when she was a baby to take advantage of her hair’s magical de-ageing properties. Rapunzel is eventually rescued by an outlaw named Flynn Rider (originally voiced by Zachary Levi), with the pair falling in love as they embark on an adventure to find her true home.

The original film would go on to garner over US$590 million worldwide, making it a no-brainer to adapt into the live-action format. Elsewhere on Disney’s live-action plate, 2016’s Moana is also set to receive the same treatment, with Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson-led adaptation hitting theatres in July 2026.
