In an era of remakes, re-releases, and remasters, Atlus is on a mission to breathe new life into its existing Persona titles. With Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload done and dusted, all attention is on the upcoming Persona 4 Revival, but that won’t be the end of it.
Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, series producer Kazuhisa Wada teased that a remake of the first two instalments will likely happen in the name of cultural preservation, doubling down on a previous interview where he hinted at the possibility.
“For me, I think a remaster or remake is some kind of cultural preservation. As a creator, it’s your duty to take the things you’ve done and make sure they’re not lost and are still around in the modern day,” said the franchise veteran. “From that same perspective, Persona 1 and 2 are something we’ll probably eventually do too.”
While revival projects aren’t new, the topic of cultural preservation has become more relevant in the wake of Sony’s plan to kill PlayStation discs by 2028. Specifically, these two instalments are the only mainline entries that aren’t currently available on modern consoles, so a remake would certainly make sense and also help bring in a new generation of fans. It won’t be an easy feat, though — not only are they the most dated and different in the lineup, but Persona 2 is actually a duology comprising Innocent Sin and the 2000 sequel Eternal Punishment.
In the meantime, the team is working hard on Persona 4 Revival, which is slated for release on 18 February 2027. An expanded version of the 2008 original, it features enhanced visuals, rearranged soundtracks, and various new combat mechanics, including Send Flying and Prime Time. Persona 6 is also in development, with no additional details announced, barring a vague description that reads, “The highly anticipated next chapter of the iconic RPG series delivers a bold, new standalone story blending heartfelt daily life and new characters with pulse-pounding, supernatural adventure.”
