Disney Lorcana Introduces Serialized Cards, Competitive League, and New Play Format In ‘Ursala’s Return’ Expansion

Disney Lorcana does not show signs of slowing down at all as it continues to march and introduces more cards into the game.

The upcoming fourth set titled Ursula’s Return and the brand new cooperative game Illumineer’s Quest: Deep Trouble are set to expand the world of Lorcana in ways we’ve seen with other TCGs.

Ursala's Return

While full details are still under wraps, we have confirmed the arrivals of Mirabel and the Madrigal family from Encanto, as well as iconic characters like Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey and the Yen Sid from Fantasia. We’re certain of an evolution of gameplay mechanics while introducing new Disney franchises and characters to the TCG.

At the same time, Ravensburger is also launching the first-ever cooperative game experience for Illumineer’s Quest: Deep Trouble. In this self-contained set, 1-4 players must band together taking on the role of Illumineers to take down Ursula herself who has been entangling other characters under her mind-control.

The game comes with two pre-constructed decks starring Mulan and Yen Sid, built from the first four Lorcana sets. But the key is Ursula’s unique deck which plays by its own rules. Four different difficulty settings are included, scaling up the challenge for those seeking the ultimate test. Players can customize the Illumineer decks using their own cards for the highest “Extreme” difficulty.

For anyone who has played TCGs in general, this seems like a take on Marvel Champions: The Card Game where players look to defeat an AI deck before time runs out.

In another reveal, Ravensburger unveiled the Disney Lorcana Challenge – a brand new competitive event circuit firing up on 25 May 2024. Tournaments will be held globally, starting in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and in Lille, France, with exclusive extended art promo cards up for grabs for top players. Reprints of hot cards like Dragon Fire, Let It Go, and Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor are among the prizes.

While serialized cards are not uncommon in the TCG world, the speed at which it has appeared in Lorcana is unprecedented. Delving into the collector’s psyche, there will be plenty of hype and demand for these cards. The hunt for The One Ring, anyone?

Both Ursula’s Return products and Illumineer’s Quest will first be released on 17 May 2024 at local game stores, Disney parks, and select Disney retail locations like the New York and Paris stores. The wider retail launch follows on 31 May 2024 but the game is still hard to come by in other parts of the world like Asia where most of the game is imported.
