‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Won’t Need Prior Knowledge, Post-Credits Expected To Shake Up MCU

The multiple timelines, universes, and events present in recent Marvel Cinematic Universe works have necessitated prior knowledge of existing lore, but that won’t be the case for Deadpool & Wolverine. Director Shawn Levy confirmed that no homework is needed to enjoy the superhero flick, as the focus is on delivering entertainment.

“I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn’t want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research,” he said in an interview with the Associated Press.

The confirmation lines up with its description as a standalone entry instead of a direct Deadpool 2 sequel. Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as the Merc with a Mouth, joining Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and a mix of familiar faces, including Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Rob Delaney as Peter, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, and more. Franchise newcomer Emma Corrin is set to play antagonist Cassandra Nova.

As seen in the most recent trailer showing Deadpool’s privates being pierced by Wolverine’s adamantium claws, Deadpool & Wolverine promises to be as unapologetic, violent, and witty as its predecessors. But these elements aren’t the only cause of excitement (its first trailer became the most-viewed trailer of all time within 24 hours), as the post-credit scene is also described to be “mind-blowing”.

In his response to an insider’s claim on X / Twitter, renowned comic book writer and Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld wrote “he ain’t lying to you!”, lending credibility to the expectation that the post-credit scene will shake things up. Naturally, all details are being kept under wraps, and speculation is rife on whether a new character or future film is being teased.

Ahead of its theatrical debut on 26 July, Deadpool & Wolverine is going full out with its promotional campaign. On top of plans to run an anti-phone public service announcement in cinemas, there are plans to launch a themed popcorn bucket, following in the shoes of Dune: Part Two.
