Director Shawn Levy Says ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Is Not ‘Deadpool 3’

CinemaCon had plenty of exciting announcements in store for eager movie fans, and Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy did not disappoint. Fans were treated to a nine-minute sneak peek at footage from the upcoming film, and the director also confirmed that Deadpool & Wolverine would not be Deadpool 3.

The strategically edited sizzle reel gave viewers a “a taste of the movie.,” said Levy in an interview with Collider, “We wanted to do it without spoilers. And yeah, it was a lot of set-up, it was a lot of first act type storytelling.” Queries about the film’s runtime were left a mystery, as the director declined to answer questions on the subject. A teaser trailer was released in February, and soon became the most-watched movie trailer of all time with 365 million views.

However, Deadpool & Wolverine will not be a direct sequel to Deadpool 2. Instead, audiences should treat it as a standalone film. “And at the end of the day, as I think we’ve said, it’s very much a Deadpool movie, but this is not Deadpool 3,” continued Levy, “This is Deadpool & Wolverine, and it is singular because of that.”

Deadpool & Wolverine‘s cast includes Ryan Reynolds (Free Guy) as Deadpool, Hugh Jackman (The Wolverine) as Wolverine, and Emma Corrin (The Crown) as antagonist Cassandra Nova. The film is set to hit theatres on 26 July 2024.
